The Evolution of Auto Safety Glass: From Tempered to Laminated

Auto safety glass has come a long way since the early days of the automobile. Tempered glass was the go-to material for windshields until the 1920s, but it was prone to shattering into sharp, dangerous pieces upon impact. In the 1920s, laminated glass was introduced as a safer alternative. Laminated glass is made by bonding two layers of glass with a layer of polyvinyl butyral (PVB) between them, resulting in a much stronger and safer windshield that doesn't shatter into dangerous pieces upon impact.

Laminated glass also offers additional safety features, such as the ability to hold the windshield in place upon impact, preventing passengers from being ejected from the vehicle. It also blocks harmful UV rays and reduces outside noise, making for a more comfortable and safe driving experience.

The evolution of auto safety glass has been driven by the need for safer and more durable windshields. Today, laminated glass is the industry standard, and new technologies continue to emerge to improve safety and durability even further. From self-healing coatings to electrically conductive films, the possibilities for improving auto safety glass are endless.
